In its early years, classes were held at what is now known as Old Main building on campus grounds near downtown Tucson (the current site is occupied by a parking lot). The campus consisted mostly on acreage donated from Greenwood/Cox Flats with additional lands purchased from time to time throughout its history . Construction began in 1887 on what would become Old Main building after Harvard-educated architect Willard Smith opened an office in Tucson upon leaving his post as Acting Superintendent for Public Works back East . In 1890 he led an expedition into northern Arizona searching for ancient cliff dwellings built by Hohokam Indians long before Europeans arrived there . By 1893 most construction had been completed including a library constructed with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie , who also financed many other buildings at universities across America during this period .
